Descrizione dell'insegnamento

General knowledge of the periodization of the historical development of the literatures and arts of the Western world from ancient Greece to the present day.

The course intends to provide the basic elements for the knowledge of the history of the cultured repertoire of Western music from Antiquity to the contemporary age.

The course aims to provide a general overview of the main events, authors, works and contexts of musical production and performance of Western music from Antiquity to the contemporary age. At the end of the course the student knows the main concepts of Western music theory, knows how to orient himself among the main musical genres and contexts by relating them to the relative historical and cultural contexts; moreover, he is able to recognize the most salient features of the different musical styles when listening, both in terms of organics (recognition of voices and instruments) and in terms of forms (e.g. fugue, rondo, sonata-form, etc.) and to relate to listening to music in a conscious and critical rather than merely impressionistic attitude.

Lectures, supplemented by listening to music, and seminars. During the course, students will be offered to participate in concerts and other musical events of interest that take place in the area. During the lessons, a list of musical works to listen to in support of the study of the textbook will be provided.

Interview aimed at ascertaining the candidate's ability to orient himself in the chronology, to describe the characteristics of the different musical styles using correctly the specific vocabulary of the discipline and to grasp the links between the development of contemporary music and other fields of knowledge and artistic expression in different historical and cultural contexts. During the interview, musical examples to listen to, chosen from those commented on in class or in textbooks, may be presented to the candidate as a starting point for discussion.
