Descrizione dell'insegnamento

Il programma dell'insegnamento è provvisorio e potrebbe subire delle modifiche

A general knowledge of the history of European art from the Middle Ages to the modern age is required, within a correct historical-geographical framework.

The laboratory will consist in experimenting the knowledge acquired through the theoretical study of artistic techniques directly on materials, to be considered preparatory to the laboratory itself. It should be noted that the students attending the laboratory should be largely the same as those who attended the History of Artistic Techniques course the previous year. Students who have not already attended this course or taken the exam will in any case be admitted to the laboratory subject to verification of the prerequisites and possible assignment of remedial activities. In particular, the techniques of inlay carving and wood sculpture will be addressed (from the sketch, to the transfer of measurements, to the carving, up to the final decoration) and of tempera painting, both on wood and on canvas. The main objective of the laboratory, in line with the History of Artistic Techniques course, is to develop students' sensitivity towards the material aspects of the work of art and the ability to recognize them through visual indicators. The practical activity in contact with the materials is precisely aimed at increasing the ability to distinguish the different techniques and evaluate the transformation processes of the materials.

Students will be able, through practical tests, to acquire the ability to identify the visual indicators useful for distinguishing the materials and executive techniques of the artistic objects. This identification must make use of the specific terminology of the discipline.

The laboratory activity will consist of brief theoretical introductions, then in demonstrations performed directly on the materials in collaboration with the laboratory technician, finally in technical tests made by the students.

Students will be evaluated through an oral exam.  The examination  of the activity carried out in the laboratory  will aim to evaluate the achievement of the following educational objectives: Ability to identify materials and executive techniques from the images of the study materials provided during the exercises or in the classroom; Knowledge of the historical profile of artistic techniques in Italy from the 11th to the 18th century.
