Teaching description

None specific; nevertheless, general knowledge of History of Western Music and its most meaningful composers and styles would ease the students to follow the course  

General overview of the chronological advancement of Western music, from 14th –19th century

General analysis of the musical events in connection with their socio-historical, cultural and artistic context of production and performance.

Week 1: Introduction. The Middle Ages And Renaissance (476-1600).

Week 2: The Baroque Period, 1600-1750;

Week 3: The Classical Period (1750-1820).

Week 4: The Romanticism (1820-1900).

Week 5: Opera: Italy and Germany.

The course aims to provide a general overview of the history of the Western music (12th –19th century)

Lectures and classes using audio examples, slides and handouts. On request, the teaching staff will provide extra support during the self-learning hours.

This module will be taught in a 4-week block mode.

The teaching materials will be provided includes:

  1. lecture slides covering all of the lecture content (in digital form);
  2. audio examples

The teaching material will be provided weekly

Final Exam: This course will have a final exam (oral). These exams will evaluate students’ understanding of the material presented in the course, including audio material and all the readings assigned during the course.

Grading:

Grades will be determined according to the following breakdown:

Attendance and participation: 40%

Final exam: 60%
